News from FIATA

FIATA issued a press release<https://fiata.com/media/press-releases/2020/8-june-2020.html> yesterday announcing that this year’s FIATA World Congress intended to be held in Busan, Republic of Korea, on 19-24 October 2020 has been postponed to 2022. Given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the guidance from various national and international bodies, FIATA and KIFFA decided to reschedule the event for the sake and care of its members. The next FIATA World Congress will take place in Brussels, Belgium, on 26-29 October 2021. Panama will then be the host of the 2023 FIATA World Congress. More details on the upcoming congresses will be available in due time.

International Trade and Law

The far-reaching global impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic highlight the importance of coordinated actions at the national and international levels to facilitate the expeditious movement of goods throughout the supply chain. FIATA’s Customs Affairs Institute (CAI) has been working closely with the World Customs Organization’s (WCO) Private Sector Consultative Group (PSCG) to provide crucial industry input, culminating in tangible impacts on the responses of customs authorities around the world.

Now, as governmental restrictions start to ease and all eyes turn to the rebuild of the economy, CAI kicks off stronger and more ready than ever before to tackle the pressing challenges of today. Save the date for CAI’s virtual interactive session on 30 June 2020 at 13:30 CET to exchange with PSCG Chair John Mein (PROCOMEX) on the latest developments in trade facilitation, share views with peers, and to actively contribute to shaping the work of CAI going forward. Key topics will include COVID-19 responses, e-commerce, and the WCO’s flagship Revised Kyoto Convention. More information coming soon – watch this space!

Learning and Sustainability

FIATA welcomes the Gulf Aviation Academy (GAA) as its first training centre in Bahrain approved to deliver the ICAO FIATA Dangerous Goods by Air Training Program. The GAA has vast experience in the field of Dangerous Goods and Training. Their flexibility to incorporate the latest technology positions them effectively to service the needs of Dangerous Goods training throughout the Gulf Cooperation Council. FIATA looks forward to collaborating with the GAA to enhance the safety and compliance of the air cargo supply chain in the region.

Digital Trends

More and more digital initiatives related to the global logistics and freight forwarding industry are flourishing in different areas, from mature platforms offering end to end digitised supply chain processes to smaller and more specialised solutions focusing on one aspect of the business. A majority of them do include some document creation/management features, which is currently participating in the multiplication of versions of critical documents such as the Bill of Lading.

It is becoming therefore crucial for the industry to step-up and ensure its standard documents are respected and made easily available in existing platforms. The FIATA digital strategy aims at tackling this with the creation of a standard document library which will make FIATA templates available in everyday tools (TMSs and other platforms) in a controlled way and by allowed companies.

The launch of this project, together with the trusted member digital library, will be the main topics discussed by the upcoming meeting of the Advisory Body of Information Technology (ABIT) to take place in the next few weeks. More information on both projects will follow.

Upcoming events

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, FIATA has decided to cancel all its international meetings until further notice. All meetings continue to take place regularly through videoconferencing systems, such as Zoom.
